Instant Chef
Decreasing hunger and food waste and Increasing Resiliency
As the Chinese proverb states, “Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime”.
1 in 9 Alaska residents use food stamps and 74% are households with children. Countless more use other food assistance and distribution programs. No child should go hungry and every parent should feel the satisfaction of being to provide the stability and comfort of a home cooked meal.
Feeding a family of five on a food budget of less than $300 a month is a daunting task but showing families how to use every bit of food creatively means a warm meal daily. A satisfied tummy for children not only allows them to feel secure but helps build in protective factors and builds resiliency. Making a little into a lot by meeting the needs of a family and taking the stress of finding a meal out of the equation allows space for families to grow and thrive.
The most accessible and affordable foods available can be challenging to cook without the skills and tools necessary. No neighbor should go hungry because they are unable to make a meal from the food they have access to.
Instant Chef is a 3-hour class designed to teach cooking techniques using accessible food, effective shopping strategies and meal planning on a budget. Each family that participates will receive an electric pressure cooker so they can replicate the skills they learn in class at home to create delicious meals in one pot. Families will be able to prepare cheaper cuts of meat, dried beans or even make broth from a leftover chicken. In a pinch we all had crackers and tuna for dinner, but it should not have to be a staple.
Reaching families in the community that would benefit the most is our priority. RCPC will work with community partners such as food distribution programs to make sure that participants being referred are families who are in need of support.
You will no longer have to be a top chef master on your favorite food program to turn a bag of dried beans, canned ham and salsa into a wonderful meal. Every family should be equipped with the necessary skills and tools to provide for their family. “Empowering families to use the resources they have to achieve their goals.”
RCPC needs Electric Pressure Cooker instant pots to reach 100 families.
