Those who know me know that I like to keep busy. With two active grandsons (and one on the way!), two grown children, a husband, my position as executive director of RCPC, and involvement with numerous community organizations as a volunteer, board member, or supporter, I am rarely sitting still.

However, my activities recently have reached a new level. About a year ago, Brenda Stanfill, Executive Director of the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living, approached me with the news that philanthropist Dennis Wise would be building them a new facility, and she wanted RCPC to be a partner in the project. After discussing the project with the board of directors, we decided to move ahead.

Since October, we have been moving non-stop. The Wise Family Center is currently under construction at 26th Avenue and Rickert in South Fairbanks, and the red and white brick walls are going up as I write this. The excitement grows as each day passes, along with my workload and that of the rest of the administrative staff. Program managers and staff have spent hours designing their new office spaces and planning for a smooth transition of services and flow of families throughout the new facility.

The rewards of this move are tremendous. We are meeting a long-term goal of merging facilities with our WIC program. We are increasing our partnership with the Center for Non-Violent Living so that we have access to resources for all types of family violence. And we will have an affordable, modern facility accessible to the entire community.

And yet, with all this hard work and change, one thing remains the same. We continue to strive to create a culture in Fairbanks that values parenting and keeping children safe. Parents need support, education, and resources. We offer home visits to families at high risk for child abuse and neglect. We provide educational supervised visits for families who have lost custody of their children due to abuse and neglect. And we give each and every parent in the community the opportunity to learn about how they can enhance their child’s growth during every age and stage of development.

We are able to do so because of support from community members like you. Your support of our mission to prevent child abuse and neglect allows us to meet families where they are. Through annual fund donations, in-kind donations to fulfill our wish list needs, and volunteer activities, you help us fill the gaps in our community. You help us provide answers to parents seeking relief. And your resources help us create healthy, nurturing home environments for children seeking safety.

We are extremely thankful for the opportunity that the Wise Family Center gives us to strengthen our partnerships and better serve families. And we are extremely thankful to have supporters like you who believe that all families deserve support as they live and grow in our community.
