Family Preservation Program

Families referred to the Family Preservation program are families who are identified by OCS as being at risk for the out of home placement of their children.  The goal of the Family Preservation Program is to address immediate safety factors within the family, increase family functioning, and reduce the chance for out of home placement.

Upon referral, families will be assigned to a Family Services Worker (FSW) and will participate in an initial intake appointment.  After the initial intake, the family and the FSW will begin the North Carolina Family Assessment Scale (NCFAS) which assesses the level of family functioning and identifies both family strengths and areas in need of improvement.  The NCFAS is re-administered throughout the time a family participates in the program as a means of measuring change.

An Initial Service Plan will also be developed, which will identify areas for skill building. The Family Preservation Program consists primarily of Home Visits.  A schedule for Home Visits is determined based on the identified level of need.

The Family Preservation Program also provides parenting education.  Parents and the FSW will work together to determine topics on which the parenting education will focus.  This service is individualized for every family. The FSW will provide resources, education, modeling, and other forms of education in order to assist the family in meeting their goals.
